November 19, 2019 was a great day for public education. Indiana’s teachers came together from all corners of the state to make their presence known at the capitol. Advocacy for public education was their cause. It shouldn’t just be their cause. It should belong to all of us. Every Hoosier who has a child, grandchild, niece, nephew, cousin or anyone else in Indiana’s public schools should care about this issue. Anyone who is concerned about the future of our state and it’s citizens should care about this issue.
It was a great day for public education because teachers were able to attract so much attention. Being able to attract and focus attention will be key to winning the fight. I was thankful that I was able to participate in the rally and I was thankful that I saw so many former colleagues there fighting for public education.
According to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick “This is Day One of many days…This can’t start and end today. Ms. McCormick also noted “Indiana kids deserve to have adequate and equitable funding,” she said during a press conference. “It’s easy to shift the blame. It’s easy to blame local superintendents … It starts upstairs in the Statehouse.”
The fight for public education will continue to be waged in the coming months. I would encourage you to get involved. Find a way to support your local teachers and the fight for public education.
