TE Tips: Personal Planning
This week on TE Tips we continue with our series on planning as we discuss personal planning.
Many people regard personal satisfaction to be one of the great priorities in their life, yet they spend little time planning how to achieve it. Personal planning is an excellent way to develop the kind of life that you want to lead. Personal planning goals may vary from attaining good physical and mental health to improving relationships to increased community involvement. As a Teacher Entrepreneur you are very busy so it is imperative to be organized. Part of organization is planning.
As we discussed last week, planning is done by great people. If you want to be great, you have to plan. Greatness won’t happen by accident. As leadership expert Robin S. Sharma of www.RobinSharma.com said “While their competition is asleep, world-class leaders are up – and they’re not watching the news or reading the paper. They are thinking, planning and practicing.” Planning is key to success. If you don’t plan the kind of life you want to have, you may end up in a very different place than you intended.
In order to plan successfully we must first consider the current state of our lives. Take a moment to reflect on where you are currently in your life. Consider the following:
- Your age
- Relationship status (single, engaged, married)
- Quality of friendships
- Health and wellness
- Personal achievements
- Community involvement
- Spiritual life
- Where you live
- Your occupation or career
- Present financial state
I realize there is some overlap between these ideas and the planning we will do in the next few weeks, but each of these areas has an impact on your overall level of personal satisfaction.
Consider your ideal life in relation to the above categories or other categories you believe to be most important in your life. Write down the characteristics of your ideal life. How does the current state of your life compare to your ideal life? If they are very similar, Congratulations! If they are very different, think about what you could change.
Our next step is to do some simple goal setting. Choose two areas of your personal life that you believe have the greatest impact on your overall life satisfaction. Take a few minutes to consider possible goals you would like to achieve in those areas.
Select and write down 1 long term (5 years or more) goal in each of the 2 categories you selected. Finally, break that goal down into smaller short term goals such as 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, and 3 year intervals. If you don’t like the above intervals, use intervals that work better for you. Remember goals should be SMART (Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timely).
Over the next several weeks we will engage in the same exercise with other areas of your personal and business life. My hope is that at the end of this series you will have a plan that will help you lead the kind of life you desire.
